Get it! is a new library service that; provides direct links from a citation in a database to online full-text of an article (when available), provides a link to search in The CAT to see if Penn State owns other formats of the publication, allows users to request an item via Interlibrary Loan if the print or electronic version is not available. For an overview of the service, see the PDF document Get it! Service at Penn State.
Who can use Get it! at Penn State?
All currently affiliated Penn State students, faculty, and staff.
Can I use Get it! from off campus?
Yes. If you have accessed a database through the library page, Get It! buttons will appear just as if you were on campus.
Currently, Get it! is available in many databases subscribed to by the Penn State University Libraries. In these databases, each citation has a Get it! button
which links to a menu of possible Get it! options. See this List of Get it! enabled databases.
The most likely cause is that you have JavaScript disabled in your browser. If it's turned off, the buttons will not appear. Re-enable JavaScript and everything should be fine.
I clicked on a Get it! button, but the Get it! menu doesn't appear. What's wrong?
You may be using a "pop-up" blocker program on your computer such as the Google Toolbar's pop-up blocker, Pop-Up Killer or Pop-Up Starter, or have 'unrequested pop-ups' disabled in your browser. You will need to turn off or disable the program to use Get it!; or you can set it to accept pop-ups from getit.libraries.psu.edu
Note: this is a particular problem with Web of Science & Knowledge (SCI, SSCI, AHCI).
I clicked on Get it! and it worked once, but the next time I tried it, nothing happened. Why?
The Get it! menu for each article comes up in the same browser window. If you switch windows to go back to the database, the Get It! menu goes into the background. Choose it from the tabs at the bottom of your screen to make it come forward.
Why are there multiple windows?
When you click on , an Get it! menu window is generated, listing all the services available for that article. When you select one of those services, a third window is generated, and it remains the window in which all activities generated from the Get it! menu take place. Unless the Target service also spawns additional windows, there will only be three windows open for any article you're looking at.
How can I find the Get it! button in a particular database?
Because our databases come from different services, the Get it! button varies in where it appears. Some databases display the button at the brief record (author, title, journal) listing, others at the abstract.
Why don't I see the Get it! button in PubMed?
In order for the Get it! button to appear, you need to be using the PubMed URL that appears on Penn State's E-Resource (database) list, namely, http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?otool=pasulib
After you bring up the search list, click on the authors' names, and the full record page containing the Get it! button will come up.
Don't use: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi
You may want to bookmark the link from the database list.
Where does the electronic full-text in Get it! come from?
We purchase many electronic journals directly from the publishers such as Blackwell, Elsevier ScienceDirect, Kluwer, Wiley and many more.
Some electronic full-text comes from full-text databases (also called aggregators) such as Proquest, ABI Inform Global, and Lexis Nexis.
See this List of Get it! full-text publishers.
Why doesn't Get it! full-text option always take me directly to the article?
We try to get you as close to the full-text article as possible, but in some cases the database software does not allow us to take you that far. In that case you may be taken to:
- a table of contents screen for a journal title; you will need to navigate to your issue and article.
- the main database search screen if the full-text comes from a fulltext database (such as Lexis Nexis); you will have to do a search by journal title and date or key words from the article title.
Why is there sometimes no full-text option in the Get it! menu?
Sometimes online full-text is not available because:
- Penn State does not subscribe to online full-text versions of that journal.
- no electronic full-text is available anywhere.
- journal titles contained in some full-text databases do not work with Get it!
Why is there sometimes no EndNote option on the Get it! menu?
Sometimes the database does not provide the information needed by EndNote. Usually this means the citation is missing a volume or issue number.
What filter do I use to import the citation into EndNote version 8?
Choose the REFMAN RIS filter.
Can I connect to Get it! via EndNote to see if Penn State has the online full-text?
Yes. One of EndNote's (version 7 and higher) features allows the program to access the full text resources provided by the Penn State Libraries Get it! service. Here are the instructions.
Set your preferences:
- Open EndNote>Edit and choose Preferences.
- Click on Open URL.
- Click in the box 'Enable OpenURL.'
- Delete any text already in the 'OpenURL Path' box.
- Type in this address: http://getit.libraries.psu.edu:9003/sfx_local/
- Leave the Arguments in the box below. Click on OK.
Open an EndNote library and choose a reference.
- Open the Reference menu and choose the Open URL Link.
- Get it! will check the available databases to see if any of them have the full text of that reference. The CAT link will show the location and call number of the print edition of the reference.
Why are there two options for full-text for some articles?
Normally, we subscribe to full-text access from the publisher, and that's the only link you'll find. However, some publishers have signed contracts with intermediary full-text providers, and that's the access we offer. When both cases apply, you'll find that you have both options for access. If one of these services happens to be down when you're working, the other service is likely to be available.
Why do I sometimes get a "words or phrase found no matching titles." message when I clicked on The CAT option?
This means that The CAT was unable to find that Penn State owned the item. If no matching records appears as online full-text, or via The CAT, then you can click on "Get the document from another library via Illiad".
Why do I sometimes get a "bad URL", an "Error 404", or some other "not found" message?
A number of problems may have occurred. Get it! is a work in progress. Links are generated on the fly according to algorithms that represent the best knowledge available of how to link to the resources in question. Sometimes the links may be wrong, or they may be out-of-date because a publisher has made changes to its site.
What if I have other questions?
